Hello, again fellow adventurers!
Our last adventure took us to the heart of Wales, where the charming town of Llandrindod Wells became our home for a few weeks. Nestled amidst rolling hills and verdant valleys, this Victorian spa town offered us a unique blend of history, nature, and a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere. As a family of full-time travellers and world-schoolers, we cherish every opportunity to immerse ourselves in new environments, and Llandrindod Wells didn’t disappoint.
A Step Back in Time
Llandrindod Wells has a rich history, which we discovered at every turn. The town’s Victorian heritage is proudly preserved in its architecture, with many buildings that look as though they’ve been plucked straight from the 19th century. Walking through the town centre felt like stepping back in time. Dylan, our 11-year-old, was fascinated by the stories we uncovered about the town’s past as a bustling spa destination. The Pump Room and the Rock Park Spa were particular highlights, offering a glimpse into the healing waters that once drew people from far and wide.
Learning On the Go
As home educators, we always seek to integrate learning into our travels. Llandrindod Wells provided us with countless opportunities to do just that. The town’s small but well-curated Radnorshire Museum was a treasure trove of local history. Dylan particularly enjoyed the exhibits on prehistoric Wales, which sparked a lot of questions and discussions about ancient civilizations and their way of life.
We also took the time to explore the Llandrindod Wells Lake, where we combined a nature walk with lessons on ecology and the local wildlife. The lake, with its serene atmosphere and swans gliding gracefully across the water, became a regular spot for us to unwind and connect with nature.
Embracing the Outdoors
Wales is renowned for its natural beauty, and Llandrindod Wells is no exception. Surrounded by the stunning landscapes of the Radnorshire Hills, we spent much of our time exploring the great outdoors. We hiked along the many trails that crisscross the area, each offering breath-taking views and a sense of tranquillity that’s hard to find in more crowded destinations.
One of our favourite hikes was through the Elan Valley, just a distance from Llandrindod Wells. The valley’s reservoirs, dams, and woodlands provided a perfect backdrop for a family day out. We picnicked by the water, spotted red kites soaring overhead, and marvelled at the engineering feats of the dams that have stood the test of time.
A Warm Welsh Welcome
Our experience in Llandrindod Wells wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the warmth and hospitality of the locals. We even had the chance to attend the Llandrindod Wells carnival, where the whole town comes alive with costumes, parades, celebrations, live music food and drinks. It was a perfect way to connect with the community and gain a deeper appreciation for the town’s heritage.
Final Reflections
Llandrindod Wells may not be as widely known as some of Wales’s more famous destinations, but it captured our hearts with its charm, history, and natural beauty. As we continue our nomadic journey, it’s places like this that remind us why we chose this lifestyle—to experience the world in all its diversity, to learn together as a family, and to create memories that will last a lifetime.
If you ever find yourself in Wales, we highly recommend a visit to Llandrindod Wells. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, this town has something to offer everyone.
