Walking the Rivers in Maxey

Walking the Rivers in Maxey

Maxey welcomed us with its timeless charm, a village wrapped in history, where thatched cottages lean softly under the sun and every corner feels like a postcard. Just beyond lies Market Deeping, a town we quickly grew fond of, with its gentle pace and winding streets that invite you to slow down and notice the details.

Holly and Suzie were our little companions on this stay, two bright souls always eager to explore. Together we wandered along the fishing rivers and lakes, losing track of time as we followed the water’s path. They bounded happily beside us, ears flicking in the breeze, reminding us how good it feels to just be present.

At home, the garden became its own world. Holly and Suzie loved their agility course, their joy infectious as they darted through tunnels and leapt with pure excitement. We found ourselves laughing often, clapping them on like proud teammates. But the garden held quieter magic too. Birds flitted to the feeders each morning, their songs carrying across the lawn, while two little families of hedgehogs made the evenings feel almost enchanted. Feeding them became a ritual, a moment of stillness before the night settled in.

And then there were the lazy days, the ones where the sun stayed high and warm, and we had nowhere to be but right there. We stretched out in the garden, listening to the rustle of hedges, watching the dogs doze peacefully, and feeling a kind of contentment you can’t quite plan for — the kind that only arrives when you let life slow down.

Reflection from the road: This sit reminded us that joy doesn’t always come from chasing big adventures, but often from leaning into the small ones. A garden full of birds, the laughter that rises from a dog’s play, the hush of a hedgehog shuffling at dusk — it’s in these simple moments that freedom reveals itself.
